Product Description

The 2008 Estate Petite Sirah is what I like to call my dark and delicious elixir. Truly a great year for this varietal as our hillside vineyards are now getting older and we are seeing how complex and flavorful the fruit is. This was one of the unique wines that stood out to me in working with our fruit this year. With the year being dry and warm and the yields low, I would have expected to see the fruit ripen quickly and have very low acid levels. This wasn't the case. We normally expect maturity at around 25 to 26 Brix but in 2008 when the sugar content (Brix) reached those levels, our Ph and acid levels weren't up to par. This caused a 2 week delay to allow the Ph and acid levels to soften. When they did, I knew we were going to have a stellar wine, great numbers and the benefits of a longer hang time. I keep saying over and over about this one, if purple was a wine or if purple had a flavor, this is it! As is normally the case, we put the wine through a very long cold soak to release all potential color that we could coax out of it. I pressed the wine off the skins at or near dry to prevent over extraction of tannin and to also preserve the beautiful fruit aromas that Petite Sirah is known for. My barrel program for this wine has been refined as well. In my search for elegant, yet powerful barrels, I began using more American oak with this wine. Wood that is extremely well seasoned and/or immersed in water during the bending to reduce wood lactones, delivers a barrel with elegance and respectful flavors to the wine. I think you will be happy with the results as much as I am. This is anoth-er powerful yet delicious wine that is in line with our style in what we try to deliver to our customers, enjoy. Unfined and Unfiltered.
